小众英语

一开始按照字面上的理解，我把free jam也理解为了“免费果酱”的意思去了。当然，这是它的本意。

小众英语做了这么多的收藏，大家应该也慢慢知道了其实英语中词组很多时候用的多的并不是它本身所代表的意思，Free jam也是一样，其实它还有“自由表演、即兴演出”的意思。常用于一些大型活动中间或结束后穿插进去的自由表演，随意发挥的那种。

我很喜欢这种表现形式.

今天在小笨霖英语上看到了Shift这个单词.我知道它是’轮班’的意思，三班制就叫’Three shifts’，例如：We have to work in three shifts to keep the company running.

一般的三班制分为：

1. 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM     像这个叫白班 Day shift
2. 4:00 PM – 12:00 PM    这个则叫小夜班 Night shift
3. 12:00 PM – 8:00 AM     这个则是大夜班了 Graveyard shift

一下子很不理解为什么会有’Graveyard shift’这个叫法。一Google,才发现Graveyard shift后面原来有这么一个有意思的故事，拿出来分享了。

Graveyard shift来自于一个广为流传的故事, 在十九世纪时, 人们有时候会不小心把还活着的人当成死人埋掉. 为了避免这种悲剧发生, 所以他们在每个棺材里都装上电铃,一种警报装置(waking device),以便让这些意外醒来的’尸体’能够按铃求救. 当然因此也必须另外安排一位仁兄晚上时在墓地(Graveyard) 里巡查, 以便有人按铃时能即时通知家属. 所以大夜班后来就以此得名, 成为了Graveyard shift.

Why is the phrase “graveyard shift” used for late-night work?

Current popular explanations for the origin of the phrase “graveyard shift” reference the 19th century problem of accidentally burying people who were still alive. To prevent this from happening, the story goes, caskets were equipped with a bell-ringing device enabling a waking “corpse(尸体)” to notify the world that they were no longer dead. The graveyard attendants who remained vigilant(警觉的) throughout the day and night worked the graveyard shift.

According to Michael Quinion at World Wide Words the above explanation is merely a story and nothing more. He explains that the “graveyard shift is an evocative term for the night shift between about midnight and eight in the morning, when – no matter how often you’ve

worked it – your skin is clammy, there’s sand behind your eyeballs, and the world is creepily silent, like the graveyard. The phrase dates only from the early years of the twentieth century.”

此外，Graveyard shift也可用”Lobster shift”或”Lobster trick”等说法表示。关于”Lobster shift”的起源有不少理论，其中大部分与19世纪90年代的美国报业有关。据说在当年的纽约市，常上夜班的报社人员喜欢在上班途中找家海鲜店吃点东西垫垫肚子，以应付漫漫长夜的辛劳工作。相比之下，另一个

故事就有点刻薄了：值夜班的报社人员由于工作辛苦，总喜欢喝点酒放松一下，因此常常扶醉而归。他们像煮熟的龙虾一样红通通的脸孔，就成了Lobster shift的由来。

最可信的一种理论认为，20世纪早期的“Lobster”一词具有讥讽意义，有“易受骗的傻瓜，愚人”之意。值夜班的确是个苦差事，谁不希望在阳光明媚的白天正常上下班？又有多少人情愿在黑咕隆咚的深夜里挑灯工作呢？和上白班的同事相比，被“骗去”上夜班的人被戏称为“Lobster”也就不足为奇了。

相信大家都看过关于海盗的电影，回想一下，是不是脑海中有这样一幅场景:海盗候拦劫船只，扣押船员

和乘客。然后把那些认为没有用的人扔到海里去。电影里面的海盗比较讲究绅士风度，他们的做法稍微

不显残忍，拿一块木板一头放在船的一侧，另一头从船身伸出去，像跳水用的跳板一样，然后逼迫那些

他们不要的船员或乘客从木板上走出去，自己投入海里淹死。因此，就有了to walk the plank这样一个词语。

当然，这种海盗现在已经没有了。但是，to walk the plank这个说法却被保留了下来。而它表示的是“

被解雇”的意思。

比如说，你可能会听说一个公司的销售部经理因为跟他的老板合不来而被迫to walk the plank。在美国

政府里有许多官员是总统任命的，因此在老总统下台，新总统上任的时候，那些老总统任命的官员往往

都被解雇，由新总统重新任命。见下面的例子。

这句话的意思是：当一个新总统进入白宫的时候，前政府任命的高级官员都得准备被解雇，好腾出位子

一个人刚买下一家服装店。下面是一个朋友在对他提出忠告。这个朋友说：

When you take over the store, think twice about making the manager walk the plank. It may

not be easy to find another one as honest and efficient as he is.

这个朋友说：当你接管店铺的时候，在是不是要解雇经理的问题上要三思而行。要找一个像他那样老实

和工作有效的经理恐怕不是那么容易。
